Fly Odyssey is working in partnership with the Tetiaroa Society on two research projects studying the Bonefish and Giant Trevally on the island of Tetiaroa in French Polynesia.

With the opening of The Brando Hotel in July 2014, Tetiaroa Society and Fly Odyssey have teamed up to offer fly-fishermen the opportunity to participate in these research programmes. The two research projects are providing the first complete data on these species in French Polynesia and will help to create a model for conservation and tourism in the region, while allowing a limited number of anglers to experience the remarkable flats fishing that Tetiaroa has to offer.

The atoll of Tetiaroa is located thirty-three miles north of Tahiti and is made up of twelve islets 'Motu'. The atoll has an illustrious history, having previously been the resort home for the Tahitian Royal family. It was purchased by Marlon Brando in 1966 and was his sanctuary for more than twenty years. With the research conducted at the Tetiaroa Society Ecostation, Tetiaroa serves as a living case study where the lessons learned can be implemented locally and applied to places across the globe.

Our partnership with Tetiaroa Society, a tax-exempt, US non-profit organisation dedicated to exploring innovative solutions to the world’s most pressing issues relating to sustainable interdependence, will allow anglers from around the world to participate in the research projects while staying at The Brando Hotel. Tetiaroa Society supports conservation efforts aimed at developing the understanding of harmonious interactions between people and their surrounding ecosystems.

Inspired by the late Marlon Brando’s vision to preserve sanctuaries for future generations and raise awareness of the fragility of our environment, Tetiaroa Society was founded by Brando Enterprises and Pacific Beachcomber's Richard Bailey, and is supported by high profile members of the international scientific and entertainment communities.

In July 2014 a new luxury resort, The Brando, opened on this breath-takingly beautiful private atoll. The Brando is unique in concept and scope, combining environmental purity, luxury and Polynesian charm into an exceptional experience. This small scale resort (thirty-three villas) offers the ultimate luxury getaway. Every villa is on a white sand beach, has its own outdoor eating and private beach area, its own private pool, soft, cozy furnishings, large windows that let you indulge in the sun, the breeze and lagoon views, and modern conveniences such as a media room. And while enjoying the villa you will have the satisfaction of knowing that everything that surrounds you has been designed around clean, renewable energy sources.

All stays at The Brando include: luxurious accommodations, all meals in all dining venues, most beverages (bottled water, soft drinks, beer, and select wines, Champagne, and spirits), 24-hour dining in the privacy of your villa, one excursion per person per day from a select list of options, one spa treatment (fifty minutes) for one person per villa per day, laundry service, internet access, one bicycle per guest, access to an outrigger canoe, kayak and paddleboard as well as snorkeling equipment.

Since the opening of the Brando hotel in 2014, anglers are now able to participate in several tagging studies on Bonefish and Giant Trevally which Fly Odyssey are running at Tetiaroa.

  • Average weight of Bonefish on Tetiaroa: just under eight pounds from forty-four fish sampled over two-week long sampling missions
  • Largest fished sampled weighed twelve pounds
  • Oldest fish sampled was twenty-two years of age and weighed eleven pounds
  • Spawning is likely to occur in September

This project, studying the movements and population parameters of Giant Trevally through an acoustic tagging study is also run by Fly Odyssey. Anglers can participate in this project and all Giant Trevally are being tagged as part of this research project.
