For the Sea Trout fisherman there is one place and one river: The Rio Grande, Tierra Del Fuego. With 16 prime kilometers of Rio Grande River it has consistently produced enviable catches of Sea Run Brown Trout since it began in 1984. With fish averaging twelve pounds in weight and running up to thirty pounds, Despedida Lodge offers the chance of the fish of a lifetime.

Fly Odyssey run hosted trips to the Rio Grande each January/February/March. We can arrange bespoke travel or a combination trip with the nearby Trout fishing in northern Patagonia or Dorado fishing in the north of Argentina.

  • Prime season: mid January to mid March
  • World’s best sea trout fishery
  • Ideal for individuals and groups
  • Excellent guide team
  • Remote wilderness location
  • Excellent lodging and cuisine
  • Average temperature: 0℃ in winter, 14℃ in warmer months

A relatively small and cosy lodge designed primarily for fishing, Despedida Lodge is built in the style of a log cabin and has a family atmosphere to it. It is located across the river and between the Estancia Maria Behety Lodge and the downstream from the more exclusive Kau Tapen. Despedida guests and Maria Behety guests share some of the pools on the river but on an alternate day basis to ensure privacy and exclusivity.

The lodge can accommodate a maximum of 6 guests staying in large twin rooms, each with private ensuite facilities. There is plenty of room to store gear and equipment. There is a spacious dining room and lounge where you can relax and enjoy a beer after a full day on the river. Large windows in the lodge offer panoramic views across the extensive open countryside.

The husband and wife team have been running the lodge for over fifteen years with their son who also guide. They take great pride in making you feel like a very special fishing group. The guides are long-established and know the river and the pools extremely well and know how to look after the dedicated fly-fisherman which is why many anglers are repeat visitors.

The lodge also has a large satellite TV and a sound system. Traditional Argentine cuisine, a fine selection of wines and made-to-order breakfasts all help make your trip successful and memorable. All meals, breakfast lunch and evening dinner, are served back at the lodge. The lodge is designed for fishing and does not offer guided non-angling activities.

Each guest room is equipped with a phone line. Internet wifi Connection is available in the lodge from 2016 but bring your own laptop or tablet.

With the furthest fishing about a fifteen-minute drive from the lodge, the guides will have you in the thick of the action in a very short time. The fishing is predominantly wading and walking and the Rio Grande poses no real challenges with its gravel bed bottom, occasional large rock or boulder and steady flow.

The guides can park the vehicles within a short walk of the pools so you can maximise your fishing.

A typical fishing day starts after breakfast at 7:30am and runs until lunch time 1:00pm-ish when you can take a break and a siesta. The afternoon session starts around 5:30pm and runs to around 10:00-11:00pm. You can of course stop earlier if you choose. With fish averaging close to 12lbs and with specimens in the 30+ lbs region you will soon realise that this is a very special place.

The fishing is with light two-handed rods or stronger single-handed rods depending on the conditions with swinging nymphs, streamers or skating large dry flies. The wind always has a role to play in this part of the world so your equipment and casting techniques used should suit the conditions. It is worth noting that the wind does ease off later in the season. We would advise all anglers to bring all the gear they need for the trip - rods, reels, lines, tippet flies, waders and boots, wading stick etc.
