Vila Bled

Vila Bled is the former residence of the Yugoslavian President Tito, so it's no surprise to find that the lakeside location overlooking the island is second to none. Surrounded by parkland and with direct lake access it is now a small luxury hotel offering superb quality accommodation and a fantastic restaurant in an unforgettable setting.

The Vila has thirty rooms and offers a mix of double-rooms and suites, all with en-suite facilities, separate shower and bath, TV, internet connection and most with either views over the lake or across the parkland. The Vila also has a spa and offers a variety of treatments, sauna and jacuzzi.

The restaurant at Vila Bled is highly regarded with top-class Slovenian and international cuisine and a fantastic wine cellar. There is a lovely summer terrace for eating and drinking in summer months as well as the wonderful Belvedere cafe - perhaps the most impressively located coffee bar in Slovenia!

Vila Bled offers a wide variety of non-fishing activities from hiking and rafting to mountain-biking and spa-treatments.

Although Vila Bled is officially a 4-star, we feel that this perhaps does not do justice to the level of comfort and the quality of its classic 1950's style furnishings and fittings, wonderful inlaid wooden floors and fantastic art works. Facilities are also excellent with a great restaurant, a separate coffee bar with unforgettable views, a wellness centre and a private lakeside lido.

Food is a-la-carte and as you would expect of a fine hotel. Packed lunches can be organised by separate arrangement with the kitchen.

Other Accommodation Options

A range of other accommodation is available in Bled, including riverside B&B accommodation and lakeside hotels.

WIFI is available in most hotels and B&Bs.

These are the head waters of the Sava River which is lake-fed and offers thirty-two kilometres of fast alpine water. The Sava Bohinjka is a beautiful river with very clear water. In parts, it appears emerald green and combined with the surrounding mountains and meadowland, this is a really beautiful river to fish. The water clarity is simply staggering when compared to some of the UK chalk streams and this makes sight-fishing a real joy.

The banks' vegetation, trees and flowers, all provide great fly life and at times with heavy hatches of flies. The dry fly fishing can be very exciting with Rainbows, Browns and Grayling all feeding under the bank side vegetation. However, it's the nymph that probably catches more fish and it is worth taking some very heavy nymphs to get down in the deep fast pools.

Whilst many of the Rainbow Trout have been stocked over the years it is worth noting that they do breed in the river and there is a growing population of wild Rainbows. Combine this with the resident Huchen (when in season,) the migratory Salmonode from the Danube (which can be very big), then there is a lot to fish for in the river and it makes for an exciting and different experience that river-fishermen will really understand and appreciate. From deep alpine gorges to more open slower flowing pools and deeps in the meadowland, there is plenty of different water to choose from where you can test your skills whatever your ability, level of expertise and preferences.

This is not a complicated river to fish. The access is generally good and wading is trouble-free for the most part. We would advise all anglers to take their own equipment—rods, reels, lines, waders and boots etc. Rods in the 3-6# with mostly floating lines should be adequate. De-barbed hooks are preferred.
