Since 2007, each year, Fly Odyssey organises hosted trips to New Zealand: it is a great way of fishing with like-minded fly fisherman and women whilst exploring a new country. Our hosts have a great knowledge of the country and where to fish and stay and they add real value to your fishing experience. Not only hosts help you with the technical side of fishing and how to improve your chances of success but they also increase your understanding of the rivers and lakes that you will fish as well as adding to the smooth running of your trip.

The hosted trips focus on three different areas of the South Island. Weeks are run in Southland, in Canterbury High Country and in The Nelson Lakes region. Accommodation is in comfortable houses which have been set up for small fishing parties. Hosts prepare meals each evening.

With limited spaces on each trip, if you are thinking you would like to join the party, call us for more information.

Fly Odyssey’s hosted trips are a great introduction to fly fishing in New Zealand. These trips focus on a week's fishing in three different areas in the South island (Southland, Canterbury and Nelson Lakes), where you will fish some of New Zealand’s iconic rivers. With over twenty years' experience of fly fishing in New Zealand, we provide you with a detailed introduction on the approach to sight-fishing New Zealand’s rivers. One part of your week is spent being guided by some of New Zealand’s finest guides while the other part of your week will enable you to go off and put your new skills to practice.

The weeks are arranged to coincide with the peak summer hatches of Cicada and Willow Grub to ensure you see the best dry fly fishing possible to large wild Trout. Sight-fishing with dry flies to large wild Trout is one of the great experiences in fly fishing and our weeks ensure that you will get to experience the joys of this type of fishing.

Rods in the 5-6# 8'6 -9ft are ideal with reels loaded with plenty of backing. Fly lines should ideally be dark to avoid spooking the fish. Layered clothing is the best approach and the colours should blend and allow for a stealthy approach. Wet-wading is primarily undertaken although waders can be usueful in case of a change in the weather.

A typical day starts at 8:00am and goes on until 5:00pm approx. The maximum number of clients per guide is two. Lunch and drinks are included in the full-day and taken streamside along with mid-morning snacks and breaks.
