For something a little different the northern province of Argentina has a unique fishery for the famous Dorado, the golden, powerful fish that is a great freshwater fly rod species.

Pira Lodge is a high-end destination for anglers wanting to fly-fish for Dorado in the Corrientes region.

  • Season: November to May
  • Fly-fish for Golden Dorado
  • Ideal for fishing singles, couples and families
  • Guided fly fishing
  • Fishing and wildlife / bird watching
  • Remote wilderness location
  • Average temperature: 0℃ in winter, 14℃ in warmer months

The lodge is located in the Corrientes Province, north-east Argentina, in the middle of the Ibera Marshlands, within 1,300,000 hectares of Natural Reserve. This area is twice the size of the Florida Everglades. The lodge sits right on the edge of a channel providing direct access to the marsh system and to the Corrientes River, located fifteen minutes south of the lodge.

The Ibera Marshland is a vast system of non-polluted crystal-clear creeks, flowing rivers, shallows and lakes. The Province of Corrientes borders Uruguay, and enjoys one of Argentina's subtropical climate patterns, with temperatures around 25℃ early and late in the season. The Ibera Marshland is almost completely unexplored and uninhabited. It is home to more than three hundred and fifty species of birds (eg Parrots, Southern Screamers, Kingfishers, Ibis, Herons), eighty-five mammals and almost seventy reptiles, and an incredible abundance of flora. During your stay you will have a chance to see species such as Capybara, River Otters, Yacare (Cayman), Howler Monkeys and Marsh Deer. If you are interested in spending extra time spotting the wildlife or the unique bird-life of the Ibera, please let the head guide know on arrival.

Built in a typical Corrientes style, the lodge enjoys a spectacular panoramic view of the vast wetlands. It accommodates up to ten guests in five large rooms, each with a private entrance, private bath, two double beds and air conditioning.

Pira Lodge offers wonderful cuisine based on local meats, fresh fruit and vegetables and delicious deserts. A traditional Asado (BBQ) will be held once during your stay, and you can sample different cuts of meat and wonderful salads. Breakfast is served 'al fresco' during part of the season, and a full-cooked breakfast is available, together with fresh fruit, yogurts, home-baked bread and jams and a selection of cereals. Our well-stocked bar is always open, and a wonderful selection of fine wines will be served during lunch and dinner. A separate building, attached by covered galleries, accommodates the spacious living room, bar and dining room, each with tall doors which open up to the wide veranda.

The lodge was designed to respect the traditional local architecture while offering all of the comforts of a contemporary hotel. Other activities available are bird-watching, horseback-riding, snorkeling, swimming and canoeing.

WIFI is available at Pira Lodge but you will need to bring your own laptop or tablet.

For many years, one of Latin America´s most exciting game-fish was kept a secret in its heartland. In the last few years, the Golden Dorado, or 'River Tiger' as it is affectionately called in Argentina due to its impressive fighting spirit and jumping characteristics, has rocketed to the top of the hot fish list.

The freshwater Dorado is a hard-fighting and acrobatic fish, well-known for strong runs and relentless jumps. Throughout much of its range, the Dorado is caught in coloured or murky waters and generally with heavy spinning tackle.

The establishment of Pira Lodge in the Ibera Marshland has generated a new alternative, allowing for clear water fishing on light spinning tackle and on fly rods, with plenty of opportunity for sight-casting. 7 and 8 wt 9 foot rods are recommended, as well as floating and sinking heads. Traditional saltwater streamers and deceivers in black, purple, chartreuse and white complete the required gear.

The Dorado, (Salminus Maxillosus), is an aggressive fish, and once hooked it makes impressive and acrobatic multiple jumps. This complex and challenging fish can be found near confluences, on edges of eddies, riffles, sharp bends in the current, and close to overhanging carpets of water hyacinth. It can be fished in narrow runs, on skinny water. Large fish are hooked in a multitude of differing locations, so let your guide show you the variety of ever-changing locations where you can make contact with these fish.

We would advise all anglers to take all the equipment they will need whether spinning or fly fishing. There is tackle available to hire at the lodge and if you intend doing this then please check that they have what you require - single-handed rods, floating and sinking fly lines, bite tippet or small wire traces and bait pattern flies as mentioned above.

Fishing Schedule

Fishing times vary depending on month and weather. A typical spring fishing day will start in the morning from 8:00 to 12:30, followed by lunch at the lodge and then a siesta and afternoon fishing from 3:30 to 7:30.

Boats and Motors

Pira Lodge is now using five 18-ft, three-passenger (two anglers and one guide) Hell's Bay Flats Skiffs with 25-hp 4-stroke outboard motors. All boats are equipped with two seats, ample dry-storage, and coolers to store drinks and lunches. We recommend using a life-vest during prolonged boat rides. Please notify the manager upon arrival if you cannot swim. Pira is a strictly 'CATCH AND RELEASE' fishery.
