If you are looking for a reasonable price for chalkstream fishing then the Kanara Beat on the River Itchen would be top of your list. This beat is superb value for money and offers a long and varied stretch suitable for two rods.

The fishing can be divided into two sections with the top half of the beat the perfect place for wading where you can find decent sized stocked Browns and a multitude of spotty wild Browns and grayling flitting around over the ranunculus or grubbing around on the clean gravel bed.
The bottom section of the beat has a small fishing hut and the river changes in character with much deeper, slower water with plenty of sport for the serious fisherman. It is a beat that will have you totally immersed in the fishing and sighting feeding fish.
The bottom section is best fished over the left shoulder or using side casting/rolls and this section may prove difficult for a beginner. This is lovely fishing on the glorious River Itchen and really good value for money.
The beat is about 10 minutes south of Twyford and easily accessed off the M3 motorway at Junction 12.

with 3 pubs/restaurants within a short walk.

The Bugle Inn in Twyford is a great place to eat, drink and relax. Situated near the historic city of Winchester in Hampshire and 5 -1 0 minutes form Kanara. Great locally sourced food and lovely rooms.

The trout season opens on 1st May and closes on 14th October.
Grayling fishing opens on 23rd October until the end of February.
The beat opens from 9 am and you may fish until dusk. The top section of the beat is perfect for wading with great stalking water and clear visibility for spotting fish.
The bottom of the beat is not advisable for wading and due to the vegetation, left handed casting, roll casting or side casting is necessary so this section may prove difficult for those with little experience.
There are some large sized Browns so suitable strong leaders may be necessary, however there are plenty of wild Browns and Grayling spread throughout the beat and a light rod would be best for fishing this beat.

Kanara Beat is easily accessed from London by travelling south down the M3. Approximate travel time would be around an hour and a half from London.
The rail service from London Waterloo to Winchester is continuous throughout the day and takes just over an hour.
A taxi service from Winchester to the beat takes about twenty minutes. Guides may also collect you from Winchester train station.
