Fly Odyssey’s hosted trips are a great introduction to fly-fishing in New Zealand. These trips focus on a week's fishing in three different areas in the South island (Southland, Canterbury and Nelson Lakes), where you will fish some of New Zealand’s iconic rivers. With over twenty years' experience of fly-fishing in New Zealand, we provide you with a detailed introduction on the approach to sight-fishing New Zealand’s rivers. One part of your week is spent being guided by some of New Zealand’s finest guides while the other part of your week will enable you to go off and put your new skills to practice.
The weeks are arranged to coincide with the peak summer hatches of Cicada and Willow Grub to ensure you see the best dry fly fishing possible to large wild Trout. Sight-fishing with dry flies to large wild Trout is one of the great experiences in fly-fishing and our weeks ensure that you will get to experience the joys of this type of fishing.
Rods in the 5-6# 8'6 -9ft are ideal with reels loaded with plenty of backing. Fly lines should ideally be dark to avoid spooking the fish. Layered clothing is the best approach and the colours should blend and allow for a stealthy approach. Wet-wading is primarily undertaken although waders can be usueful in case of a change in the weather.
A typical day starts at 8:00am and goes on until 5:00pm approx. The maximum number of clients per guide is two. Lunch and drinks are included in the full-day and taken streamside along with mid-morning snacks and breaks.
