Both rivers offer freshwater fly-fishing like no other place in Europe. Chalkstream and Limestone rivers offer truly spectacular location and site fishing opportunities. Whether dry fly or nymph fishing there are plenty of challenges to test both your knowledge and tackle. Epic hatches of up-wing Mayflies, Caddis and Stonefly produce plump Trout and extra large Grayling. Twenty-inch Wild Brown Trout and Grayling dominate these river systems.
The evening rise will drag you into the wee hours before retreating to a luxurious riverside lodge. Both rivers offer great dry fly and nymph fishing opportunities for large Brown Trout and Grayling. Some rivers, like the upper Ribnik, have introduced Rainbow Trout into their trophy sections.
The season starts in April when there can still be snow on the ground with wintery conditions and cold snow-melt river water. Fishing can be very good however conditions can be challenging. The season really get under way from mid May and June with the fish searching intensively and aggressively for food when Mayflies, Stoneflies and Caddis all start hatching in abundance. Dry fly-fishing at this time can be really exciting with hard fighting Browns not been too selective on their food choice.
As the season progresses the water level stabilises, clears and drops especially during the warmer summer months. Along with a slight increase in the water temperature the fly hatching activity really increases. Site fishing in crystal clear water and as you would expect at this time the Trout and Grayling start to become more selective and fly size needs to be reduced to tempt them.
From September into October with fly hatching activity above and below the surface, very active nymphing can be a very productive technique especially during the cooler mornings.
We would advise all anglers to bring all the equipment they need for fishing, from waders to rods, reels, lines, leaders and tippet material. Also put some thermals in to wear under your waders as the water temperature remains cool to cold throughout the season.
