Christmas Island fly fishing client report
Christmas Island is one of the great salt water fly fishing destinations, for bonefish, GTs and offshore species too. We offer several options for fishing there, both standard lodges and a bespoke personal guiding service with experienced local guide Michael Marao and staying in a local community run hotel. Tim Render spent two weeks with Mike on Christmas Island over the summer, and writes:
“Thanks for organising a great trip to Christmas island. Mike was an excellent guide, always able to find the right flat for the state of the tide and lots of bonefish, big GTs and other trevallys over the reef and also plenty of tuna and wahoo offshore. Good fishing everyday, and several spectacular days with big fish or lots of bones.
“The personal service, with your own boat and guide gave great flexibility. We could design our own days, and were able to fish some of the more remote flats, in the lagoon and ocean side, not often reached. It also gave the ability to mix and match your days, fishing the flats when the tide was right and then going offshore as the bone fishing cooled.
“The Sunset Horizon Hotel lived up to its name, with dinner on the beach every night watching there sun sink into the Pacific ocean. Accommodation was basic – as you expect on Christmas Island – but fine, with en suite and air conditioned rooms. What more could you want – I thoroughly recommend Mike and his bespoke guiding, and will be back for more soon.”
