Casa Veijo Chac, Ascension Bay – Hosted Trip Report

Paul Procter again hosted 3 weeks in Mexico’s Ascension Bay in November 2019 at Casa Veijo Chac. Once again the fly fishing was superb despite some poor weather at times. Here is Pauls report on his time in the bay…..

The Fly Odyssey trip to Ascension Bay, Mexico got off to a flyer this year due to near perfect conditions.  During the first week our eight strong party got amongst permit on most days.  In fact, Kevin Stolz and Chris Hartley had a red letter session with over ten permit coming to their boat alone in one day.  I spent the opening days bedding in on bonefish where singletons and small groups of these ghosts could be intercepted on the flats.

By the forth day, conditions took a turn for the worse when tropical storms and high winds made sight fishing challenging.  In such adverse weather the guides are keen to search for tarpon and snook, often found hugging the mangroves.  With a leafy backdrop, spotting shadows and shapes is so much easier beneath leaden skies.

Again the group faired well, especially with snook, which seemed extremely obliging.  With regards to tarpon, getting them to take wasn’t really an issue, actually hanging on to them proved problematic.  As many know these silvery pelagics have steely hard mouth parts.  I myself dropped a heavy fish on the third day.

By week two, improving weather trends brought a settled spell.  Jack Crevalle might not rank high on some angler’s saltwater list, but they truly are a force to be reckoned with.  Extremely aggressive and quick out of the blocks these bullies of the flats provide exciting sport for those willing to chase them.  Thankfully, most of the group were more than up to this task.

Week three was all about permit and predators.  On the first morning, I found myself attached to a big permit that took 1hr 15 mins to subdue.  The barracuda too which until now had remained lethargic, came on the feed.  In one day alone four of these toothy creatures couldn’t resist a needlefish imitation whipped past their noses.  Many of the 10 strong group reported similar incidents both with cuda and even reef sharks.

So diverse are the saltwater opportunities here, our groups continue to grow year after year.  Already, 2020 will see us descend on Ascension Bay and with many satisfied anglers eager to re-booked places are going quickly.
