Fly-Fishing the Exmouth and Ningaloo Reef World Heritage coastline provides the opportunity to fish at Australia’s only reliable bonefish fishery, experience world-class permit fishing and the number-one place to chase Marlin on fly. Since the discovery of this fishery in 2005 when Brett Wolf lead a team of intrepid anglers in search of Australia’s holy grail, it now tops the bucket list for many in search of a double figure Bonefish on fly.

With a huge variety of saltwater species to target including sight-casting to Permit and Queenfish from specialist flats boats, through to chasing Billfish, Golden and Giant Trevally and surface feeding Tuna schools in open water, the options when visiting the region certainly don’t end there.

Exmouth lies approximately twelve hundred kilometres north of Perth in western Australia. Ningaloo Reef, famous for its whale shark migration and diving, runs two hundred and fifty kilometres along the coastline of the region. With the vast, shallow Exmouth Gulf offering protection from the open ocean, the Ningaloo Coast offers an endless array of stunning, unspoilt, deserted beaches with crystal clear water and clear blue skies.

It is perfect for snorkelling, sunbathing, water sports, or simply relaxing and soaking in the superb scenery. For non-anglers or as a family destination, there are world-class dive sites, and the annual Whale Shark, Manta Ray and Humpback Whale migrations along the breeding and birthing grounds of the Ningaloo reef to immerse in.

  • Location: Exmouth is less than a two-hour flight north of Perth
  • Climate: with no wet season, it is dry and warm all year round
  • Ningaloo Marine Park:the coral reef fringes 280km along the coastline
  • Trophy Bonefish: one angler has landed two 10lb+ bonefish in one day

True Blue Bones has continued for over a decade to be clearly one of the best guiding operations in the country. With a world-class permit fishery and the development of Australia’s only reliable bonefishery, pioneer Brett Wolf can lay claim to putting Exmouth on the map within fly fishing circles.

With numerous accommodation and package options available, Exmouth is great for grabbing a few mates or the family and heading west for some outstanding flats fishing. A short flight north from Perth, Exmouth has the benefit of providing sheltered fishing conditions from all angles, with both the gulf and reef side of town providing extensive habitat to explore.

Fly Odyssey have access to some of the prime tides available to target the Trophy Bonefish and Permit on offer throughout the year, including shots at big Queenfish, Blue Bastards, Golden Trevally and Giant Trevally common.

Double figure bonefish are caught regularly in this part of the world, the sun is almost always shining and the local seafood is simply amazing.

As with most guiding operations, you will be on the water early and have the option of chasing a variety of species each day. You can cast a fly at teased Marlin or Sailfish in the morning for example, then move in through the reef to the lagoon flats and cast a fly a Trophy Bonefish and feeding Permit in the afternoon with the sun over your shoulder.

The fringing reef off Exmouth and the North West Cape is Australia’s largest, and lays anything from a few hundred metres to a few kilometres offshore - and it basically forms a giant lagoon inside. With extensive shallow sand flats and low tidal movement it makes the perfect combination for polaroiding and sight casting from the front deck, which is equipped with an electric and lean bar.

Seasonally, the region fishes well year round and there are a host of other species on the flats and creeks that can prove quite a distraction when looking for Bonefish, including Permit, Milkfish, Barramundi, Golden Trevally, Giant Trevally, Queenfish, Spangled Emperor, Giant Herring, Tarpon, Cobia, and Blue Bastards.

Depending on the duration and conditions during your stay, Brett can optimise your chances during the week on any number of species you wish to target. However, if it is Permit and Bonefish you are after, then get in touch. For larger group bookings, Fly Odyssey can arrange co-guiding with a number of other operators in the region.

As per all Fly Odyssey bookings, you will be provided with a comprehensive and detailed pre-trip fly fishing guide, prior to your departure.
