Tasmania: a beautifully scenic and historic environment

The first salmonids to find their way to the Southern hemisphere were sent to Tasmania, making a journey to this part of the world an essential experience for those who love to fish for brown trout. Brown trout ova originating from the Rivers Itchen and Wey were transported for 91 days on the clipper 'Norfolk' and arrived in Tasmania on the 21st of January 1864. From this batch of ova the first trout to be hatched in the Southern hemisphere resulted. Today Tasmania offers both river and lake fishing to wild brown trout within a beautifully scenic and historic environment. Tasmania has a unique convict history and any trip there will provide a fascinating insight into the first Europeans lives in the antipodes.

Sight fishing at its best

Tasmania is famous for its lake fishing, particularly to 'tailing' brown trout in skinny water. Trout forage in the shallow margins, tails and dorsal fins breaking the surface as they scrounge for food. This is sight fishing at its best and demands careful stalking and fine presentation. Tasmania is also renowned for its polarioding of lake margins under blue skies, lake windlane fishing and the adoption of loch style techniques from the UK which has proved to be extremely successful on the thousands of lakes available to fish.

Tasmania, a diverse fly-fishing experience

Perhaps the most unheralded aspect of Tasmania, though, are the rivers and streams available to the fly-fisherman. During the season, a myriad of insects come off the water providing some exciting and challenging dry fly fishing. For a diverse fishing experience, Tasmania offers it all.
