Saltwater fly fishing in New Zealand has always been a big fish destination. It's just that only those anglers chasing records were in the know and they kept their secret well. Today however there is a growing enthusiasm for saltwater fly fishing in New Zealand and those well kept secrets are now available to anglers from the UK and Europe through Fly Odyssey.
The jewel in the crown of the inshore fishery is the Pacific Yellowtail Kingfish. This prolific species has a well-earned reputation for being one of the hardest fighting fish in the ocean and is described as a rapacious carnivore. Their aggressive nature means they have a penchant for attacking flies. Kingfish can grow up to two metres in length and over 60 kg. Given that the fly-caught world record stands at just over 25 kg on all class tippets, this gives some idea of the immense fighting abilities of these fish.Tangling with one of these fish makes such an impression that it will leave you wanting more.
Saltwater Fly fishing in New Zealand also includes encounters with other hard fighting species such as Kahawai, Silver Trevally, Snapper, Skipjack Tuna and Yellowfin Tuna. All these species are prized sportsfish in the Southern hemisphere. These fish are generally found as immense schools feeding on the surface and provide exciting and sometimes exacting fishing. Immitating the tiny krill and baitfish that these fish feed on provides a real challenge and the rewards are worth it.
New Zealand is also famous for its Blue and Striped Marlin fishery boasting the largest striped Marlin in the world. As the warm tropical currents push down along the eastern seabord of New Zealand the various tuna, mahi mahi and marlin species come inshore to feed on the prolific bait schools. Anglers have long travelled to the top of the North Island seeking battles with these majestic creatures and now you can experience the ultimate in Bluewater Fly fishing with Fly Odyssey.
Through our association with Saltflyer, New Zealand's premier saltwater fly fishing guide, we can provide either inshore or bluewater fly fishing trips to one of the worlds most remarkable saltwater destinations.
