As a saltwater fly fishing destination in the Australian tropics, Hinchinbrook Island has legendary status in Australian fly fishing circles. The Hinchinbrook regions rugged mountainous landscape covered by tropical rainforest ensures there are few places on earth to match the beauty of the surroundings in which to fly fish. The region is part of the wet tropics and is therefore home to one of Australia's iconic sports fish: The Barramundi. And where there are Barramundi, there is a host of other tropical species that are willing to take a fly in this ultra competitive environment.
Hinchinbrook Island is located approximately 2 hours south of Cairns. The Hinchinbrook passage between mainland Australia and the island itself is a maze of large estuarine systems that has a vast array of habitats from sandflats to mangrove lined creeks. Outside the island you find bluewater and the Great Barrier Reef.
The pinnacle of saltwater fly fishing is the Permit and Hinchinbrook was the location of the first fly caught Indo-Pacific Permit in Australian waters. It is one of the few places in the world with the opportunity to cast to Indo-Pacific permit. This species is every bit as difficult to fool as its US and Central American cousin and is a capture that will live long in the memory.
The Australian version of the Tarpon is also found in these waters and while it doesn't grow to the sizes found in the US and Central America, it does have the same fighting and acrobatic qualities. But perhaps the most exciting fishing to be found here is the sight casting to barramundi cruising the expansive sandflats. Throw in numerous trevally species, queenfish and a host of others and you get a fly fishing paradise.
Fly Odyssey works with Dave Bradley regarded as one of the best guides and fishermen in the northern tropics of Australia. Dave has fished the region with a fly since the mid 1980's and is highly experienced at finding fish and providing an insight into this magnificent fishery.
