Fly fishing the Fraser Coast offers Australia's answer to the bonefish flats fishing experience and the Golden Trevally is the species that has taken the mantle of Australia's top flats fishing species. Golden Trevally are found during the summer months in the waters around Fraser Island and can be seen 'tailing' while feeding in the shallow sandflats. The challenge of then hooking and landing these fish makes a flats fishing experience to remember. When you consider that while casting at these tail wagging fish you will be shadowed by the world heritage listed Fraser Island, the largest sand island in the world, you realise that you are fishing a very special place.
There is another species, the Longtail Tuna, that is highly sought in the sandy straits of Hervey Bay. Its blistering speed means quick accurate casting is required to hook a fish and miles of backing to land one. The species encountered when fishing the Harvey Bay region is constantly changing with the migration of several tuna, mackerel and trevally species ensuring that you never quite know what you may come across in a days fishing.
Fly Odyssey works with the premier guide in the region Nat Bromhead of Saltwater Fly Fishing Adventures. Nat has an outstanding fishing platform, a customised 5m boat with casting deck and poling platform, and knows the area intimately. His ability to find fish for his clients is legendary in Australia and is someone who is extremely passionate about the sport.
