From October through to the end of April the rivers are open and classical backcountry nymph and dry fly sight fishing can be experienced. During the winter months the famed spawning run of Lake Taupo rainbow trout run up the Tongariro River and the various tributaries of the big lake. Anglers flock from around the world to experience some of the most remarkable rainbow trout fishing available anywhere.

Trout Cottages

Fly Odyssey has a selection of trout cottages situated on the South Island of New Zealand, suited to the independant fly-fisherman. Here you have self-contained accommodation that provides the ideal base for exploring a particular region and each has been selected to put you within easy reach of a variety of fly-fishing opportunities. Rates start from £25 per night per person. Weekly rates available.

Trout Cottage Package

Fly Odyssey has put together a package to complement the trout cottage experience which will provide anglers with the chance to experience several guided days fishing with one of our select guides and then the chance to explore the regions rivers surrounding our cottages and put the lessons learned from a guided day into practice. These cottage packages particularly suit small fishing parties or those travelling with families who like a base and more affordable fishing adventure.

World renown fly tier and guide who operates out of the Murchison area. A regular contibutor to Fish and Game, New Zealand’s premier fly-fishing magazine, Peter has designed a range of outstanding flies that have proven to be to the trout's liking and an essential part of every kiwi fisherman's fly-box. Peter knows the plentiful rivers of the Murchison region intimately.

Jeff Oakes

Jeff is born and bred in the Bay of Plenty and has run the Lake Tarawera Lodge since it opened in 1996. His knowledge of the fly-fishing to backcountry brown and rainbow trout in the Taupo and Rotorua regions ensures that you will have the best opportunity to find, hook and land one of these trophies.
