Fly Fishing the Exmouth and Ningaloo Reef region provides the opportunity to fish at Australia’s only known bonefish fishery. The discovery of this fishery occurred in 2005 when Brett Wolf lead a team of intrepid anglers in search of Australia’s holy grail. There had been incidental reports of bonefish from various locations around Australia but until that point the discovery of a viable fishery had not occurred. It was on this trip that Brett uncovered a bonefish population at Exmouth. It has since been described by editor of Flylife, Rob Sloane, to be "one of the most significant events in the history of saltwater fly fishing in Australia", and now you have the chance to experience it for yourselves.
These bonefish are perhaps the least fished to bonefish in the world. The number of anglers that have cast a fly to these fish can be counted on one hand. There are countless miles of unexplored flats in the region and the chance to catch bonefish that fight each other to get hold of your fly. Fish range from 3 lbs to double figures and provide a memorable fight often jumping clear of the water. This is the chance to experience a pristine environment while fishing to naive bonefish that don't yet know what a bonefisherman looks like. You will be part of uncovering the secrets of Australian Bonefish.
Exmouth lies approximately 1200 km north of Perth in Western Australia. Ningaloo Reef, famous for its whale shark migration and diving, runs 250 km along the coastline of the region. The reef lies anything from a few hundred metres to a few kilometres offshore - thus forming a giant lagoon with extensive shallow sand flats and crystal clear water. The clear blue skies the region is famous for combined with small tidal movements makes this a perfect bonefishing environment.
There are a host of other species on the flats as well that can prove quite the distraction when looking for bonefish. They include golden trevally, giant trevally, blue trevally, goldspot trevally, queenfish, spangled emperor, milkfish, giant herring, tarpon, cobia, sweetlip and permit.
Fly Odyssey works with Brett Wolf to bring UK and European anglers the opportunity to experience this unique discovery and the only bonefish fishery in Australia. Ningaloo Reef provides a pristine environment in which to fly-fish. Brett has developed this fishery and knows it better than any other person in Australia. He is a highly experience guide having owned and operated the Blue Lake Lodge in Tasmania for a number of years. He has also experienced much of the bonefishing available in the South Pacific region. His ability as a guide and knowledge of the area will see you being one of the few people in the world to be able to say that they have landed an Australian Bonefish.
