Fly fishing in Cuba offers a selection of some of the best flats fishing imaginable for bonefish, tarpon and permit. Cuba with over 4000 island and sand cays has vast flats and mangrove lined shallow bays providing extensive habitat for those beloved three saltwater sports fish. The opportunity for a grand slam as well as a huge diversity in "other" available species, including Barracuda, Snook, Snapper, Jacks, and even Lemon Shark make this a saltwater fly fishers heaven.
The diversity of locations and accommodations from rustic rural lodges to self sufficient liveaboard operators and high class hotels means there is a destination to suit the hardcore fishermen to those who prefer some style with their fishing.
Fly Odyssey has teamed up with a variety of Cuban operators to provide the most comprehensive range of fly fishing opportunities available in Cuba. From the bonefish of the Las Salinas mangroves to chasing silver on the flats of Isla de la Juventud there is a Cuban fly odyssey.
Cuba's south coast offers a unique fly fishing opportunitiy in the Zapata National park in an area known as Las Salinas. Recently opened to fly fishermen, having been a government controlled area, Las Salinas is a fly only fishery. Only 6 anglers per week are ever allowed to fish the region and each angler is accompanied by his/her personal guide, who is experienced in fly fishing, in a flat bottomed skiff.
The fishing area is a vast flat divided into many lagoons connected by small channels, making this the ideal habitat for flats species. Bonefish, Permit, Jack Crevalle and Barracuda will see the majority of your encounters with bonefish averaging 3-6lb.
A week at Las Salinas will also include a day or two fishing the Hatiguanico river for Tarpon and Snook. The rustic rural setting of your accommodations provide a great insight into the rural Cuban lifestyle.
If tarpon are your thing then Las Brujas is the place for big numbers of tarpon with fish to be found in excess of 100lb. This easily accessed and highly affordable location will see tarpon as the predominant focus of your weeks fishing. The tarpon fishing is to rolling fish and fishing some deeper channels but sight fishing is also possible at times. While there will be jacks and barracuda, it is the tarpon that are the real attraction.
A great place to take the family or for a dedicated tarpon mission.
Isla de Juventud has some of the best tarpon flats fishing in the world. The majority of tarpon fishing will occur on the deeper flats, channels and mangrove lined lagoons with fish ranging in size between 15 and 120lb. Combine this with some outstanding bonefish and permit fishing and you have a stand-alone saltwater fly fishing destination.
There are two accommodation options for Isla de Juventud.
For those who prefer dry land you can stay at Hotel Rancho and for
those who like the mobility of a yacht then the Perola is a 75 foot
luxury live-abord providing an exceptional service for your Cuba fly
fishing adventure.
Cayo Largo is in the South Central region of the Cuban Archipelago, one of the last virgin spots left on the planet. Cayo Largo offers fine saltwater flats fishing for tarpon, permit and bonefish within close proximity of your accommodations at the luxury Hotel Sol Melia. The prime season runs February to June and the chance of a Grand Slam is at its highest with migratory Tarpon to 100lb, good numbers of Permit and the year round bonefish present.
