Bahamas Islands: fly-fishing for bonefish

Some of the world's best fly-fishing locations can be found on the Bahamas, with a 100,000-sq-mile archipelago that extends over 500 miles of the clearest water in the world. The 700 islands of the Caribbean, including a multitude of uninhabited sand cays and islands provide some of the best saltwater fly-fishing environments available. The Bahamas are famed for their bonefish, permit and tarpon and anglers from throughout the world flock here to experience the excitement of casting a fly at these three remarkable fish. Floating along quietly on the front of a poled flats boat or wading and stalking the flats of the Bahamas will provide encounters with bonefish, permit, tarpon, jacks and barracuda that will create a saltwater fly-fishing addiction.

The Exumas

Fly fishing the Exumas' pristine sand flats provide what can only be described as a class destination for a bonefishing vacation. The sand flats and coral cayes that make up The Exumas are some of the most idyllic tropical paradises imaginable, with the added advantage that they are inhabited by huge schools of bonefish. Bonefish average 2-4lb with fish getting up to and over the trophy 10 lb mark commonly seen.

The fly fishing for bonefish is tidal dependent, and when the water is high and clients cannot wade, our Guides will fish the numerous Creeks and Mangrove margins where Bonefish take up station during high tide periods. It is also not unusual to see a rolling Tarpon, so bring the cockroaches, toads and other Tarpon flies. Permit are also seen on occasions so a crab pattern or two should not be left out of the fly box. The local Exuma guides are very experienced, many with a 2nd or even 3rd generation family guiding history, and their extensive local knowledge will keep you fishing effectively throughout the day despite the state of the tides.

Fly Odyssey has teamed up with ‘The Cays’ development which is ideally located, being situated in a region of the Exumas that has rarely been fly fished or even visited. The adjacent Cays and Islands also extend some 15 miles westward, and most have flats, both large and small in the near vicinity. Bonefishing packages at The Cays include, self-catering accommodation that can cater for groups up to 6 in number making it an ideal location for a group of friends or a family vacation. A complementary car for the duration of a visit means non-fishing partners can also explore the island, and visitors also have exclusive use of the resort’s bar, grill and pool.
