Fly odyssey UK director Gilly Bate has just returned from…
I have just spent the past month visiting the South Pacific’s finest and most luxurious fly fishing locations. My stops included time at The Brando in French Polynesia and a visit to the premier three lodges on the north and south islands of New Zealand – Owen River Lodge, Tongariro Lodge and Poronui Ranch. Over the next few weeks we will provide some detailed reports on each location.
THE BRANDO – FRENCH POLYNESIA
The Brando is a luxurious 6 star eco hotel located on the remote tropical coral atoll of Tetiaroa. Since 2011 we have been taking our clients to Tetiaroa to fly fish for the large bonefish and giant trevally, the exceptional triggerfish and various other species found on the flats. Initially staying in the dilapidated old bungalows of Onetahi during the construction of the hotel and for the past 4 years in the exceptional accommodation of the Brando. In 2014 we invested in a 16ft Carolina skiff which now ferries our clients to the various flats located within the lagoon.
Our guide Teihotu Brando knows Tetiaroa intimately having spent his whole life helping to protect the marine resources of Tetiaroa. In 2015 the local government introduced a ban on netting in the lagoon from which we have since seen an increase in all species within the lagoon and over the past 2 years the Tetiaroa Society has been conducting a ground breaking lagoon replenishment program in partnership with the CRIOBE, a local scientific organisation. Alongside this we have conducted a tag and release program for bonefish and giant trevally.
My recent visit to the island to catch up with Teihotu and resupply him with rods/flies/leaders for the upcoming season enable me to get a few days on the water and reacquaint myself with the local bonefish. We encountered plenty along with many bluefin trevally, which seem to have benefited hugely form the netting ban and the odd triggerfish. I was lucky enough two be able to bring our two children aged 7 and 9 to experience the joys on being on the flats, catching bonefish and taking in the marine wildlife.
The Brando offers not only a luxurious hotel but also great fly fishing. It is the ultimate place to take a family or non fishing partner and be able to get onto the flats for a day or two of exceptional saltwater fly fishing.
