Fly odyssey UK director Gilly Bate has just returned from…
Welcome to the edge of the world our guide said as we arrived on St Brandon. He was quite right, this is a location very far off and you certainly do feel that you could while standing on the edge of a 3 mile reef, simply fall off! 7 days of superb fly fishing followed. Bones in the morning as they moved onto the flats in a very relaxed manner and an average size which was very pleasing. Indeed my first 5 fish were all bigger than any bone I had previously caught.
Afternoons were spent casting at bluefin trevally and occasion GTs. One afternoon I had 5 GTs attack my mullet fly and they all missed! Each fish was over a meter and when I got the hook up from a fish larger than any GT I’d ever seen before I was left shaking minus my line and pride! It was left to Sean to make amends with an amazing back casting ability who showed how it should be done. Well done Sean, a great fish caught in great style.
What more can I say. Bones and bluefins by the dozen. More permit than I could shake an Aussie (Dave R) at and GTs to give you nightmares! Oh yes, and the best guides I have had the pleasure of fishing with.
